The sun's rays were relentless. The light carved clear shadows on Kaminarimon-dori. As I walked on, I saw a bus stop on the other side of the street. Only there was a small patch of sun between the shadows. It was like a sliver of a stage cut off from its surroundings.
Surrounded by shadows, the bus stop stood out like an actor in a spotlight. There were all kinds of people there. Some were waiting for the bus, others were just passing by, each seemingly playing a different role in the light. As I gazed at them, I was struck by a strange sensation. It was as if I were peeping through a peephole and stealing a glimpse of everyday life. But I could not be sure whether the view through the hole was reality or an illusion. The borderline created by light and shadow drew my gaze into an ambiguous fluctuation.
