I was walking along Kaminarimon-dori. As its name suggests, this street, which crosses in front of the famous Kaminarimon gate, is always crowded with cars. Traffic is heavy, and the sound of engines echoes incessantly. But it is not only cars that drive here. A rickshaw weaves its way lightly through the gaps between the cars. Against the roar of the engines, the silent labor of the wheelmen seemed to contrast something.
As I walked along, two rickshaws passed in front of me. There was a strange sense of the extraordinary in this scene. In this city, rickshaws are a tourist attraction. For foreigners, it is a way to experience exoticism, and for Japanese, it is a vehicle that evokes nostalgia. However, I honestly do not know where this nostalgia comes from. For me, who has never known the days when rickshaws filled the streets, it may not be a memory of the past, but rather an illusion created by borrowing the memories of others.
