In front of the Great Buddha of Kamakura in Kotoku-in, there is an incense burner with a hole in it. Unlike the old Buddha statue, which according to Azuma Kagami was made in 1243, this incense burner does not seem to be so old. It is covered with metal and has holes in it in several places to hold incense.
When I looked into one of the holes, I saw a girl on the other side. She was one of the many school trip students on the grounds of the temple. The girl seemed to be just as curious about the hole as I was. The girl was smiling on the other side of the incense burner, as if she had noticed me looking in from the other side.
