Although the Nansegai Sairaden is not a particularly prominent tourist attraction, the inside of its hall was very crowded. Most of the people there were locals, and there were no gentiles like me in sight. At the time, some kind of ceremony was being held, and many worshippers were standing around a large incense burner, listening to what could be considered a sermon or part of a ceremony.
I don't know the details of what ritual was being performed. But I was struck by the serious expressions on the faces of the worshippers. Most of them were listening to the story while praying with their hands together. Their posture showed a deep respect and faith in the content of the ritual.
It is said that this place was originally built by the Guo family, who lived in Nan'an County, Quanzhou, mainland China, and moved and enshrined the Guangze Zun Wang, who was enshrined in their own hometown. The deity was probably a kind of clan deity for the Kaku family. In this light, the people gathered here may be descendants of the Guo family or related to them.
