An old sailing ship was moored in a park in Malacca, a restored version of the Flor de La Mar, a trading sailing ship that sank off the coast of Malacca in 1509 after reaching Malacca from Portugal, at the western end of Eurasia, via the Cape of Good Hope and India. Dark clouds were spreading over the sailing ship. After a while, it began to rain.
Malacca, which was located at a strategic point for maritime trade, was swallowed by the stormy seas of the Age of Discovery. When the Samudera Pasai Sultanate, the first Islamic state in Southeast Asia, which was visited by Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta, was destroyed by Portugal, Malacca became a Portuguese colony. It was not until 1957, after the Dutch and British periods, that it became independent again.
