It was quiet at the Denzu-in, a Buddhist temple in Koishikawa, with hardly any visitors. As I walked around the quiet precincts of the temple, I found a Jizo statue sitting on the ground. He was sitting with his cheekbones propped up, looking very relaxed. He almost looked as if he was sleeping. And, of course, he never opened his eyes even when I stood in front of him. There were no visitors to the temple, so he must be bored with nothing to do. It was a quiet afternoon. I felt that this relaxed expression was evidence of the peacefulness of this town.
Incidentally, Dentsu-in is one of the family temples of the Tokugawa Shoguns. The grave of Tokugawa Ieyasu's mother, Odai no Kata, is located here.
