Although there are villages on the other side of the Mekong River from Luang Prabang, there are no bridges in this area. To cross to the other side, you need to take a ferry. The long, narrow boat in the photo is the ferry.
There are a lot of tourists in Luang Prabang, including me, but the passengers on the ferry are all locals. This is because it is very difficult for non-local people to get on this ferry. There are many obstacles waiting for you to reach the boat. I was repeatedly approached by touts of tourist boats, who tried to force me into their expensive boats.
I managed to get past the touts and boarded the ferry, which was loaded with not only people but also baskets. The fare for locals was very cheap, but as a foreigner I had to pay a bit more. Still, it was surprisingly cheap compared to taking a boat for tourists.
