There were people releasing birds in cages in the precincts of Jin De Yuan in Jakarta. These people seemed to have come to this Chinese temple in a group. They were all carrying cameras and seemed to be taking pictures of each other as they released the birds.
They took turns coming up to the cage with the bird in it and opening the lid of the cage to let the bird out while the rest of the group was clicking their shutters. I don't think a certificate is necessary for the virtuous act of releasing a bird, but it looked like they were all visiting to release a bird in a friendly manner and were taking pictures of each other to prove it. The person who opened the lid and missed the bird returned to the others with a refreshed look on his/her face, perhaps because he/she had obtained the proof. Instead, those who have not yet done their part come to the basket.
As I watched, it was the turn of a young girl. When the girl fearfully opens the lid of the basket, the birds all take off at once, and the sound of the shutters echoes through the languid air of the precincts of the temple. It was more like a photo shoot for unsuccessful idols than an act of accumulating virtue.
