In the wholesale district, most couriers use carts to carry their goods after unloading them from their trucks. However, some of them use wicker baskets to carry their cargo. A cart would be convenient for easily stacked loads like boxes, but some of them probably carry irregularly shaped loads. In such cases, men like the one in the photo are very useful.
What is particularly striking is how natural it is in India to carry loads on your head. It is not uncommon to see people walking through crowds of people with baskets balanced on their heads. What is even more surprising is that there are even people who can take their hands off the basket and still keep the load steady. It is as if their head and entire body have become one, and they have refined the art of supporting their luggage.
This scene reminds me of the days when peddlers in Japan used to carry their loads in the same way. This practice, which can only be seen in old photos and documents, has all but disappeared. These techniques may have become “lost technology” in today's convenient means of logistics.
