While I was looking at the tracks from the Hijiri-bashi bridge over Ochanomizu station, trains came out of the tunnel and just passed each other. The trains in the photo are the Marunouchi Line. It's a subway line, but in this area it comes above ground a bit.
The Marunouchi Line is the second subway line built in Tokyo after the Ginza Line. Subways built in the past don't run so deep into the ground, so they sometimes run above ground even in the city. Such is the case with Shibuya Station on the Ginza Line. It would be a mistake to think that subways always run subway.
