The shutters of the stores lining both sides of the aisle stretching through the Suisen Palace Market were all closed. There were no electric lights in the roof-covered aisles, and dimness reigned. Despite being inside a marketplace, there was a sense of silence in the air, making the fact that it is one of the largest markets in Tainan seem somehow hard to believe.
I was walking alone in the dimly lit aisles. There was no sign of anyone, and the sensation of walking through the empty corridors was like wandering through an abandoned building. It was like a space where time had stopped and only my footsteps echoed as I walked.
Eventually, a small puddle of sun came into view at the end of the passage. That was the only part of the building that apparently did not have a roof. The fact that there is a place where the sun shines through makes the place seem strangely real. Then a man emerged from the puddle.
The man had a broom in his hand. He had emerged from one of the shuttered stores and was probably going to start sweeping the storefront. There was no hurry in his movements, which blended in with the quiet aisles.
