The town of Beruwala was spread out along the sea. The word "Beruwala" is derived from the Sinhalese word for a place where sails are taken down. This town was the first settlement in Sri Lanka for Muslim Arabs who came by boat from the Middle East. True or not, it is also mentioned in the story of Sindbad the Sailor of the One Thousand and One Nights.
As I walked along the beach, I saw a man sitting on the shore looking out to sea. Beyond the sea was the Indian Ocean. Beyond that is the world of Arabia. Perhaps he was thinking of the Arabian world he had yet to see.
