Many men were sipping chai at a cafe I saw on a street corner in Mumbai. The place was crowded. A man standing in the shop was busily making samosas. He noticed my camera and took one look at me and smiles at me. Looking at another man standing at the back of the shop, I saw the man drinking chai with a grim expression in contrast to the man making samosas.
The shop was very busy. But the only people in the shop were men and no women. It is the same as in coffee shops in the Middle East, and even in India, it seems that only men are allowed to enjoy chai outside the house. It is not prohibited by law. However, if a woman sets foot in such a place, she may be branded as a "slut", I guess. At the very least, it may not give them a very good image.
