The Hongo campus of the University of Tokyo has arches here and there. The large number of arches indicates that the architects of this campus must have had an extraordinary attachment to the arch shape. The passageway in the photo also has an impressive arched structure. A man is walking slowly under the dimly lit arch.
This arch is a lancet arch, and the entire building seems to have been designed in the Gothic style. However, this is not a church. This is a school building of the University of Tokyo. It is said that the Gothic style is imbued with the idea of “aiming at the creation of a rich life and looking up to high ideals,” so perhaps the designer also intended this arch to symbolize a school-oriented and noble spirit befitting the highest academic institution in Japan. This intention seemed to be quietly conveyed in the dim light that filtered into the passageway.
