As I walked, I reached Khaosan Road. The street was as crowded as ever. Restaurants and bars for foreign tourists lined both sides of the street, and many tourists were coming and going.
The large signs on the street were all written in English, making it look like a town somewhere in America. In fact, during the Vietnam War, Thailand was a vacation destination for American soldiers, and many of them took a short break here. Pattaya, not far from Bangkok, developed greatly at that time. However, time has passed, and when I walk down Khaosan Road, I don't see any soldiers, and there is nothing to remind me of the war. There was an air of peace in the air. I was squatting in the middle of the road, trying to take a picture, when I saw a woman in shorts pass me.
Khaosan Road, lined with open cafes and restaurants, is one of the cheapest places to stay in Southeast Asia, let alone Thailand. To be precise, I should write "was". The cheap lodging district is not only lined with cheap hotels, but also with stores that are of high value to the poor traveler. In the past, Khaosan Road had not only cheap hotels, but also travel agencies for purchasing airline tickets, laundry shops for washing clothes, etc. It had the atmosphere of a cheap hotel town. I used to buy a plane ticket to Beijing at a travel agency on Khaosan Road and fly there.
However, time has passed, and I feel that Khaosan Road has completely changed since I first came here. Walking down the street, I couldn't find any cheap hotels or travel agencies. The only shops facing the street are fancy food shops for foreigners. I guess this is the trend of the times. Reading Yuji Shimokawa's book, it seems that before Khaosan Road became famous as a cheap lodging district, cheap lodging was concentrated in Chinatown. But nowadays, Chinatown does not have the image of a cheap hotel at all. In the same way, Khaosan Road may lose its image as a cheap hotel district in a little while.
Incidentally, the cheap lodgings that have disappeared from Khaosan Road seem to have moved to the back of the alley a few streets away. As long as there are no more poor travelers, the demand for cheap hotels will not disappear.
