Walking the street along the seaside, I found an elderly woman. She was leaning against the wall and talking to me when she noticed me. Unfortunately, she talked in Sinhalese, a mother tongue of the Sinhalese people who make up the largest ethnic group in this country. I couldn't understand what she said to me.
Despite Sri Lanka was one of the colonies of Great Britain, English was not widely spoken in this country.
