At the water’s edge, a group of young boys played without a care in the world. It was a scene unchanged from what I had witnessed 14 years ago. Their laughter echoed along the shoreline, where trash remained scattered, and signs of locals using the area as an open toilet were still evident. Walking along the beach required careful attention—one wrong step could mean stepping on something best avoided.
Time had passed, and the city had continued its march toward development, yet the basic infrastructure needed for public sanitation here still seemed nonexistent. Far from a clean, picturesque beach, this shoreline remained littered and neglected. And yet, the boys ran barefoot through the shallow surf, splashing in the murky water without hesitation.
What looked uninviting to me—a place I wouldn’t dream of stepping into—seemed like paradise to them.
