At the entrance to the site of the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, there stands a large paifang with five arches. The plaque reads, "Great China is the most righteous." As the name suggests, this place was built in honor of Chiang Kai-shek. Whether Chiang Kai-shek himself was a "righteous" person or not is a matter of judgment.
The triangular-roofed structure beyond the gate is the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. There is still a long way to go from this gate to the memorial hall. The site is too big. One feels that Chiang Kai-shek was a powerful man in Taiwan, and that even after his death, he had to continue to show his dignity to the people of his own province whom he had oppressed.
