Once I crossed the Hirose River, the urban atmosphere completely disappeared and I was walking through a residential area that could be found anywhere. Although I had checked the map, I was beginning to wonder if this was the right road to take when I saw a sign indicating the entrance. I followed the unassuming signs and arrived at Zuihoden, the graveyard of Date Masamune. The mausoleum of the warlord, known to all Japanese, is located a bit far from the centre of Sendai City.
Unfortunately, the original Zuihoden was destroyed by fire during an American air raid on Sendai in 1945 at the end of World War II. Today, the reconstructed main hall, worship hall and Nirvana Gate stand looking like the originals. However, these reconstructed buildings are unique. The last major renovation was carried out in 2001, the 400th anniversary of the founding of Sendai. Because it was not that long ago, the colours are still very vivid. This would not have been the case if the original had been preserved for nearly 400 years.
