A man had parked his motorcycle in front of the wooden door of the house in the Chinatown. He was astride the bike, rustling at what he had in his hand. He appeared to be a postman. He is probably looking for mail for this building.
There is an oblong plaque written in Chinese characters hanging above him. The overseas Chinese living here in Malacca are called Peranakan, and many of them are descendants of people who migrated here from mainland China hundreds of years ago. Hundreds of years after they left their homeland, they still seem to have maintained the habit of using Chinese characters properly.
The inscription on the plaque reads "隆昌", which has the same meaning in both Japanese and Chinese, and means to prosper. The word "spirit of words" may sound very Japanese, but I feel that Chinese people also believe in the spirit of words, as they are quick to write down their wishes and hopes.
