The Teishakudo Hall of Teishakuten in Shibamata, famous for Tora-san, is housed inside a large building itself. This is to protect the wooden carvings on the outside of the hall. Stepping inside the sculpture gallery, which is outside of Teishakudo but inside the building, is a curious way to get a good look at the decorative carvings of Teishakudo.
As I entered the gallery and looked at the sculptures, I found a scene with a celestial maiden. This decorative sculpture is called a "sermon sculpture," and it depicts a story from the "Lotus Sutra" in wood carving. I guess there is a story in which a heavenly maiden appears, but I do not know what kind of story it is. But the two celestial maidens did not seem to mind my illiteracy.
