The city of Vigan, located in the northern part of Luzon Island, has prospered as a trading center since the days when the Philippines was under Spanish rule, and the old town is still standing and is registered as a World Heritage Site. Unlike Intramuros, the old town of Manila was spared from the ravages of World War II.
Among the old town, Calle Crisologo is one of the main tourist attractions in Vigan, as it still retains the streets of the Spanish colonial era. As I walked along the cobblestone streets, I saw horse-drawn carriages called Kalesa parked on the street.
In this day and age, I tend to think of horse-drawn carriages as vehicles for sightseeing. It may seem too much to see a traditional horse-drawn carriage parked on a cobblestone street stretching through an old town, but the situation is a little different here. The horse-drawn carriages in this city are not only for tourists but are also used by the locals. In the northern part of Luzon, it is not uncommon to see horse-drawn carriages mixed in with cars.
