Although only sightseeing boats carrying tourists are noticeable, there are quite a few boats operated by local people in Luang Prabang. The Mekong River, one of the largest rivers in Southeast Asia, is not only used for transportation but is also a fishing ground, providing a bountiful harvest for local fishermen. A visit to the market for locals in the mornings reveals a large selection of fish that appear to have been caught in the Mekong River.
The large number of fishermen means that there are also many boats for them to ride in. The wooden boat I saw on the riverbank was one such boat. Two men were sitting on top of the boat, which was placed on top of an oil drum. They seemed to be in the middle of repairing the boat.
