There were two umbrellas on the doorstep of a house I passed in Kathmandu. One was hanging on the wall, and the other was on the ground in front of the door. Looking closely, I saw a man behind the umbrella on the ground. He was looking into the umbrella and repairing it. Seeing how many umbrellas there were, it seemed that this man was repairing umbrellas for a living, rather than repairing his own. During the rainy season, it rains every day in the Kathmandu Valley. Umbrellas are a necessity here.
The fact that you see umbrella repairers, which you don't see very often in Japan, suggests that umbrellas are not so cheap here and many people continue to use them after they break. Umbrellas are not something that can be easily bought at a convenience store like in Japan.
In a world where umbrellas are expensive, when your favorite umbrella breaks, it is normal to have it repaired by a repairman in town. As a result, the business of umbrella repairman is established here in Kathmandu.
