Shinjuku Gyoen has several faces. Within the large grounds, there are gardens built in several different styles, including British, French and Japanese, and each has a very different atmosphere. At this time, I was walking in a Japanese garden with a circular pond. Shinjuku Gyoen was the former residence of the Naito family of the Shinano Takato domain in the Edo period. The remains of the Naito family's residence, which do not remain in the English- or French-style garden areas, are said to be preserved in the Tamamo Pond.
