I saw two men standing on the sidewalk in Kuala Lumpur. One was talking on his cell phone and the other was standing there with his hands on his hips doing nothing. They both looked as if they were waiting for something to come. I wondered if they were waiting for a taxi.
The history of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, is not that old. Malacca has a much longer history. It was first developed by Chinese immigrants in 1857 as a tin mining center. The immigrants settled at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers and called it Kuala Lumpur, or "the place where mud (lumpur) meets (kuala)". With the development of tin mining, the town grew and became the capital of Malaysia when the Federation of Malaya gained independence from Britain in 1957.
