There is a square in the center of the long and quiet Bungamati, and the stone Rato Machhendranath Temple stands in the middle of the square. Machhendranath is a Hindu-Buddhist saint and a reviver of Hatha Yoga, who is regarded as an incarnation of Shiva by Hindus and Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara by Buddhists. In Nepal, Bungamati is considered to be his birthplace, and the Rato Machhendranath is the symbol of the city.
Although the festivals held here are famous for their grandeur, Bungamati is a tranquil country town when there are no festivals. As I walked slowly around the Rato Machhendranath Temple, I saw a small, fat woman walking along the temple's corridor. She might have come to pray for a good harvest.
