The island of Penang is also very sunny. For this reason, sidewalks are roofed to provide pedestrians with shelter from the sun. However, there are no arcades as in Japan's shopping streets. The ground floor of the buildings are recessed into the back, and the sidewalks cut into the buildings.
I was walking along such a roofed walkway. A man was at the end of the aisle lined with pillars. The man, who was running at a short pace, suddenly stopped and turned to his left. He looked a little surprised. Maybe he had found someone he knew on the other side of the road.
