As I walked through a residential area, I found a building that suddenly filled the quiet with a noisy sound. It was a town factory. The entrance door was open, giving a clear view of the inside. Inside, a number of wheel-like machines were lined up in rows, moving without a break. Two women were busily working between the machines.
I had no idea what they were making. Still, it was clear from the machines in motion and the people working there that the factory was running at a brisk pace.
I stopped at the entrance and stared at the inside. But the two women working there seemed completely oblivious to my presence. Or perhaps they were aware of my presence, but their priority was the task at hand. With their eyes fixed on the task at hand, they continued to work fluidly with the machines without a single idle word.
As I gazed at the lively scene in front of me, I suddenly shifted my gaze to the back of the room and saw a Shinto altar. Inside it, a single deity was enshrined. It was the only god that remained quiet in the factory, sitting there peacefully without being swallowed up by the noise and busyness of the factory. Only his presence seemed to be aware of my gaze. The mysterious presence that I suddenly felt at a moment seemed somehow mysterious in contrast to the clamor of the factory.
