The approach leading to Toshogu Shrine from under Mt Kuno was a splendid trudging path

It was probably a mistake to think that by climbing the mountain from the coast, I could enjoy a view of the sea and get the best of both worlds. First of all, public transport from Shizuoka Station to Mt Kuno, the start of the climb, is poor. It is very difficult for me to get there as I do not have my own car. I thought I would be able to enjoy a good view of Suruga Bay on the way up Mt Kuno, which is 216 metres above sea level, but this was not the case. Although Suruga Bay is visible, the trail is overgrown with trees and the view is not good. As a result, I had to silently climb the 1,159 stone steps to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine at the top, without stopping to enjoy the view. It was a bit of a punishment.

According to the official website, the climb takes only 20 minutes. But it feels long. The slope on which the trail is built is steep, and the path is a series of stiles. After a short distance, you turn on your heel and change direction. It's a beautiful, textbook-worthy turnaround. The disadvantage of a turn is that it looks so close that you think you can get there quickly, but in reality there is still a distance to go. My mind was quickly confused by the fact that I had to climb several stone steps to get there, even though it was right above my head.
