The boy rolling the tire passed right in front of me without taking his eyes off it

I found myself wandering the streets of Bhaktapur, an ancient Nepalese city cradled at the foothills of the Himalayas. The old quarter, defined by its red brickwork and intricately carved wooden facades, casts a fleeting illusion—as if one has unwittingly stepped into a meticulously crafted medieval tableau. Yet, stray just a short distance from the tourist-swarmed epicenter, and the cobblestone alleys plunge into a profound, almost eerie silence. Laundry hangs haphazardly from the second-story windows, serving as irrefutable proof of human habitation, yet the presence of the people themselves is inexplicably absent. Where do the denizens of this town conceal themselves beneath the midday sun? As I navigated this deserted, stage-like avenue alone, a young boy appeared in the distance, breaking the stillness.

He was entirely lost in the simple thrill of tire rolling, propelling a worn-out rubber hoop along the street. Rather than driving it with a stick, he guided it with his bare hands, expertly maintaining its momentum over the treacherous, jagged cobblestones. The sheer, unadulterated joy on his face was palpable. I recall reading that hoop rolling is a pastime with a lineage ancient enough to grace the sides of Greek amphorae. A game that has universally captivated the hearts of children across millennia is, without a doubt, a magnificent form of entertainment.

I stood at a slight distance, quietly mesmerized by his complete absorption in such an exquisitely primitive, cost-free diversion. Countless ornate windows flanked the alleyway, yet they remained empty, devoid of any watchful adult eyes peering out from the shadows. Amidst the heavy silence of the historic streetscape, the boy dashed onward, leaving behind nothing but the solitary, rhythmic scuffing of rubber against ancient stone.
