A funeral was being held at the Pashupatinath Temple. I did not know whose funeral it was. But from the many people gathered there, it seemed to be the funeral of a famous person.
In Nepal, cremation is common as in Japan, but the difference is that before cremation, the body is purified with river water. When the coffin containing the body of this celebrity-like figure was brought to the waterside of the Bagmati River, which runs along the side of the temple grounds, the lid was opened and the coffin was cleansed with water. People gathered around to look inside in remembrance of their final farewells.
While the air was filled with sadness, what was a bit disconcerting was the presence of a TV crew mixed in with the attendees. The people with TV cameras were filming the body as they approached the coffin. It is not so common in Japan, but it seems that they are filming the body itself. Since there was no one to criticize them, this may be the norm here. I wonder if this is used for the evening news.
