A crowd had gathered in a corner of the alley. They were gathered around a table set out on the street. People's faces were serious. They were playing mahjong. This is China, after all. I have encountered people playing cards or chess on the street, but I have never seen people playing mahjong outside of China. Here, in addition to the people playing mahjong, there were also people sitting on chairs watching the game in their spare time. Mahjong must be popular in the alleys of Shanghai.
The laundry was drying above the heads of those who were staring at the mahjong tiles with serious faces. I was worried that drops of laundry might drip onto the mahjong table, but the people enjoying the game seemed unconcerned about such things. It was a peaceful time.
