From behind a column, an old woman suddenly appeared. A tiny earring glinted at her ear, less a piece of jewelry than a fragment of daily life woven naturally into her being. When she noticed the camera, her eyes widened like a child caught in mischief, then quickly softened into a warm, familiar smile. Her front teeth were missing—an almost comical “medal of absence”—yet the very gaps only seemed to deepen the tenderness of her expression.
Mỹ Tho, known as the gateway to the Mekong Delta, brims with riverfront markets where fish and fruit spill over in abundance. The woman’s smile, too, seemed part of that lively marketplace. In Vietnam, older women often wear earrings not only as adornment but also as quiet talismans, said to guard and bless their wearers. As a traveler, I cannot claim to put much faith in such beliefs. What struck me more was the resilience hidden deep in the folds of her face—an unspoken charm more powerful than any ornament.
