Many Japanese houses have been relocated to Sankeien Garden. This building, called Rinshunkaku, is one of them. Originally the villa of the former Kishu Tokugawa family, it was purchased by Tomitaro Hara, who built Sankeien in 1906, and moved here. Stepping into the room of the Japanese house, I found the room surrounded by paper sliding doors, dimly lit, with soft light shining through the paper screens.

It seemed symbolic of the changing times that a villa owned by the Kishu Tokugawa family, one of the three highest-ranking families that would have emitted a shogun if the times were the times, would be in the hands of a businessman.
