Nishi-Shinjuku, lined with high-rise buildings, used to be a water purification plant. There used to be a facility called Yodobashi Water Treatment Plant, which was used to supply purified water to the city of Tokyo. It would be a bit of a misnomer to say that this was a relatively recent development, but water purification was carried out here until 1965.
Today, there is no trace of the water purification plant, and high-rise buildings stand side by side. There are wide roads between the buildings, and the width of the roads shows the fact that it was not so long ago that the area was developed. There are also sidewalks and trees planted along the roads. Even though it was night, the trees were illuminated by the strong light, casting a clear shadow on the road surface.
