There were stalls on the street in Malda. The man in the photo is one of the workers at one of them. Next to the man, you can see a pile of boxwood. He was selling pomegranates. Since the pomegranate contains a lot of fruit inside, it has become a symbol of fertility in many cultures, and here in India, there is a custom for women suffering from infertility to drink the juice of the pomegranate.
When I walked around the residential area, I saw many children playing outside, so I thought the number of children an Indian woman has in her lifetime might be quite high, but it is not so. Although much higher than in Japan, it is much lower than I had expected.
