The street running in front of the Kaminarimon Gate was filled with the sound of incessant traffic. Cars of all sizes were passing by on the roadway, and rickshaws were weaving in and out of the traffic. The scene was strangely harmonious, yet somehow awkward. The mere thought of moving alongside a huge automobile on the same road was enough to make one break out in a cold sweat. Yet, there was not the slightest hint of such fear on the faces of the rickshaw pullers.
As I stood by the side of the road watching the scene, a rickshaw crossed in front of me. The chauffeur's movements were surprisingly smooth and powerful. While I was admiring the sight, I suddenly saw a supercar speeding down the roadway in the distance. The light reflecting off the dazzling body of the supercar briefly glanced off the shadow of the carman, then quickly vanished. In that moment, the contrast between the old-fashioned rickshaw and the supercar, which symbolized the future, was strangely burned into the back of my memory.
