I was walking through Shinjuku as usual. Around the area outside the south exit, there are still alleyways. I particularly like this place because it has a slight atmosphere of the black market that stood in the throes of the post-war years. While many people come and go, cars rarely pass through.
In a corner of the alley, there was a spontaneous resting place of sorts. There are no special facilities, no roof or chairs. Just a gathering of people. Some are blowing smoke, some are drinking juice, everyone is having their own time. Where there are many people hanging out, the air seems somewhat stagnant.
The stagnation was strangely pleasant, and I decided to join them. Away from the hustle and bustle of Shinjuku, I took a break in a corner of this alley. My thoughts drifted back to the black market that flourished during the chaotic post-war period.
