The old quarter was still surrounded by the wall. And people came and went through the gates. It might be inconvenient. However, I thought the old atmosphere was preserved in the old quarter for that reason.
Walking the old town, I encountered one of the gates which were made with a horseshoe arch. It was enough big to pass through for elephants. And I saw a square minaret on the other side of the gate.
