This day we were in Sassoon dock, south of Mumbai. This is a fishing port not too far from the city center. There are a lot of fish being landed and a lot of people working there. The man in the photo was also working at the Sassoon dock.
The man was sitting on a tire placed in a large hole in the wall. I could see a knife in his hand, so I guessed that his job was to cut the fish that had just been landed. The man looked at me with the knife in his hand and smiled.
The name "Sassoon Dock" is a reference to David Sassoon, a Jewish merchant, who built this dog on reclaimed land in 1875, and it was owned by the David Sassoon & Co, which was founded by David Sassoon, hence the name. David Sassoon, a native of Baghdad who fled persecution and settled in Mumbai, was a successful businessman and a central figure in the Jewish community who is said to have done extensive charitable work.
Jews in India. I was surprised because I thought India consisted of a large number of Hindus and a small number of Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, and Jains. However, it seems that Jews have been living in India for a long time, and there is a term for the Jewish community in India called Bene Israel. Indeed, there are synagogues in both Mumbai and Kolkata, and in Kolkata, a man who called himself a Jew approached me. I guess the Jewish community is still alive and well today. I can't help but admire the Jews who, despite their small numbers, continue to maintain their own culture.
By the way, Vidal Sassoon, a brand of shampoo and conditioner, is also Jewish, but it seems that he is not related to David Sassoon.
