Rikugien has many trees, some of which are plum trees. This garden is one of the best places in Tokyo for plum trees. If you visit during the plum blossom season, you can enjoy the flowers in full bloom.
Although the custom of viewing plum blossoms has been around for a long time, they are not as popular as cherry blossoms. People drink and eat under the flowers during hanami (cherry blossom viewing), but under the plum blossoms they simply look at them. This may be one of the reasons for their unpopularity. Although the name 'hanami' is used to obscure the fact, many people must really prefer dumplings to cherry blossoms.
