Behind the main shrine of Hie Jinja Shrine, which stands on a small hill in Nagatacho, there is a narrow, steep staircase. It is a back approach that connects the Shinto sanctuary on the hill and the everyday world on the flat ground. Unlike the front approach, which even has an escalator, this one stretches quietly, as if hidden from the public eye.
The steep stairs are covered by a series of red torii gates and resemble a tunnel. A businessman with a plastic bag in his hand was slowly descending the stairs, which reminded me of Fushimi Inari, although on a completely different scale, and a woman with long hair was coming up from the bottom.
