An imposing building called the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall stands in Zhongshan Park. The “Father of the Nation” here refers to Sun Yat-sen, and the name “Zhongshan” is his nickname. When he was living in exile in Japan, he happened to see a nameplate of a mansion with the name “Zhongshan” written on it, which he liked so much that he started using it as his own name. He is a rare person who is respected both in Taiwan and mainland China, as he initiated the Xinhai Revolution. The hall commemorating Sun Yat-sen in Taipei is surprisingly large and surrounded by spacious corridors.
The corridors seemed like the perfect place to do some exercise. I had hoped to see some locals doing tai chi here, but it seems I was wrong. The corridor was deserted, and there were no tai chi practitioners to be seen anywhere.
In its place was a lone girl in a red T-shirt. She was leaning against a thick pillar, fiddling with her phone and seemed absorbed in something. Her red T-shirt stood out vividly in the silence. It was a strangely impressive sight for me, as I had come expecting to see a tai chi class.
