I was wandering through a quiet, sun-drenched residential pocket of Ben Tre, a province nestled deep within Vietnam’s vast Mekong Delta. Here, coconut palms dominate the horizon in every direction, and the air feels permanently tied to the region’s famous kẹo dừa—the sweet, chewy coconut caramels made by reducing fresh fruit nectar. As I drifted down a secluded lane with absolutely nothing to shield me from the fierce tropical sun, my eyes were drawn to the wide-open doorway of a modest home. There, perched on the threshold, sat a tiny girl.
The moment she spotted me—a foreign stranger of dubious appearance wandering into her world—her eyes went wide with astonishment. It was as if a spell had been cast, freezing her in time. Remaining perfectly still with her elbow propped on her knee and her chin resting in her small palm, she locked her gaze onto me. Perhaps she was naturally shy, or perhaps my face simply struck her as an evolutionary anomaly. Either way, her unblinking, fiercely serious stare possessed a peculiar gravity—more than enough to bring my footsteps to a grinding halt.
Right beside her, casting a small shadow in the dust, sat a single, clear plastic bottle of water. In many parts of Vietnam, particularly the rural stretches, advanced water treatment and infrastructure have yet to catch up with necessity. As a result, even locals rarely drink from the tap. Down here in the lower reaches of the Mekong River, where groundwater is constantly threatened by silt and saltwater intrusion, clean drinking water is a serious business—it is either strictly boiled or bought. Seeing a commercial bottle of mineral water standing guard even at the feet of such a young child drove home the stark, daily reality of the country's water situation far better than any statistics could.
