Walking through Berhampore, I passed by a small store. A man was sitting at the counter. This store was the kind of general store that can be found all over town. When I peeked inside, I saw that the entire wall was filled with merchandise. Candy was sold, and shampoo was sold. And in the back of the store, there was a refrigerator, so I guessed they sold juices and other items. However, it would be a mistake to think that you can always buy cold drinks here. In India, sometimes the refrigeration system is not functioning and the refrigerator is just a shelf.
The man who owns the store looked at me blankly as I scurried around the store. He had a bright red bindi on his brow and I could see dark circles under his eyes. Perhaps he hadn't slept well. The man looked so sleepy and kinky that I forgot to ask him if the refrigerator was working properly and if I could buy a cold drink.
