I had heard of the term "100 Famous Mountains in Japan," but I did not know that there was a "100 Waterfalls of Japan," a selection of waterfalls. As the name suggests, this is a selection of 100 waterfalls representing Japan. The 100 waterfalls were selected from among 527 candidate waterfalls submitted from all over Japan.
One would have thought that all of the waterfalls would be located far from Tokyo, but to one's surprise, there is a waterfall in Tokyo that has been selected as one of the 100 Waterfalls of Japan. It is located in Hinohara Village, which is a bit far from the center of the city, but it is still in Tokyo. It is Hossawa Falls.
If you turn off the road that runs along the Kita-Akigawa River and walk up the path that follows the stream, you will soon reach Hossawa Falls. If you think it is a small waterfall in Tokyo, you will be disappointed, but in a good way. The first stage of the four-stage Hossawa Falls has a drop of 26 meters, making it a magnificent waterfall. The water flowing into the basin is said to be clean and used as drinking water in the neighborhood.
