A lot of people were coming and going through the atrium at the west exit of Yokohama station

The improvement work on Yokohama station, which had seemed to go on forever, was over before I knew it, and the west exit had changed drastically. A large shopping mall had been built right above the station.

After exiting the JR ticket gates, I walked up a few stairs to the exit, where I found a large atrium with an escalator extending upward. Not knowing what was up ahead, I took the escalator to the top and ascended. I glanced around and saw that there were many fashionable stores that I had no connection with. That's not important at this point. I wanted to look down on the atrium from the upper floors.

I went up a few floors and looked down through the railing. I could see small people milling about down below, some riding the escalators, others resting on benches. I used to meet up with my friends when I was in high school around the spot where I looked down from here, but there were no vestiges of that time anywhere. It seemed to have completely changed into a different place.
