When it first opened, it had the image of a fashionable spot, but it has turned out to be a commercial facility located in a rather remote and subtle location far from the station. My image of Yebisu Garden Place has completely declined. The moving walkway leading from Ebisu Station to the Garden Place was at first an unusual and exciting element (I had never seen such a moving walkway before, except at airports!). Now, however, the moving walkway has become nothing more than an inconvenience to get to the commercial facilities, and I feel that this is symbolic of the deterioration of the image of the facility.
The tenants in the facility have changed as well; the large bookstore has somehow disappeared, and Mitsukoshi has closed. The atmosphere has changed from what it was in the beginning. At least the Garden Cinema, Garden Hall, and Tokyo Photographic Art Museum are alive and well. Under such circumstances, there is one restaurant that still retains the atmosphere of the late bubble economy when it opened, with neither the bursting of the bubble economy nor the lost 30 years in the wind. It is the chateau restaurant Joel Robuchon. The exterior, decorated with limestone procured from France, is still lit by an elegant lamp even today, despite the fact that its surroundings are being tossed about by the currents of the times.
