A river called Punyamata flows through the town of Panauti. It is a small river with not much water volume or depth, and while the boys enjoy floating down the river, the riverside is a place for women to do their chores.
The two women in the photo were also squatting at the water's edge, doing their chores. The chore they were doing was laundry. In Nepal, it is not unusual to see people washing their clothes in the river water. Since washing machines are not widely used in households, there are still people who wash their clothes using river water. One of the reasons for washing clothes in the river may be that there is not enough water in the tap at home.
Unfortunately, I didn't know where the men were doing while the women were washing their clothes in the river due to lack of research. Perhaps they are just relaxing in front of the shrine.
